Most nebulizers come with a mask, a mouthpiece, or both. Your doctor may tell you which to use; here is the general idea.
Mask vs mouthpiece
| Mask | Mouthpiece | |
|---|---|---|
| Who | Babies, young children, very breathless people | Older children and adults who can seal their lips |
| Covers | Nose and mouth | Mouth only |
| Ease | No effort needed | Needs steady mouth breathing |
How a mask should fit
- Covers the nose and mouth.
- Light seal on the cheeks and chin.
- Does not press on the eyes.
- Elastic strap comfortable, not tight.
When to replace
- Cloudy, cracked or stiff plastic.
- A lost or torn strap.
- When a child has outgrown the size.
- Keep a spare mask set.
