A pulse oximeter shows two or three numbers. Here is what they mean. Your doctor may give you a personal target — follow it.
The numbers
| Reading | Meaning | Usual range (healthy adult at rest) |
|---|---|---|
| SpO2 % | Oxygen saturation of the blood | About 95–100% |
| PR (bpm) | Pulse rate, beats per minute | About 60–100 |
| PI | Strength of the pulse signal | Higher = more reliable reading |
Get a reliable reading
- Rest for a few minutes and warm your hands.
- Remove nail polish.
- Keep your hand still at heart level.
- Wait for the number to settle, then note it.
Readings can be wrong when…
- Fingers are cold or the hand is moving.
- Nail polish or artificial nails are on.
- Circulation is poor.
Get help immediately if…
- You feel breathless, have chest pain or confusion, or lips look bluish — whatever the device shows.
- Your reading stays below the target your doctor gave you.
