Using a nebulizer is simple once you have done it a couple of times. Always follow the instructions your doctor gave you about the medicine — this guide covers the device.
What you need
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| Nebulizer (compressor or mesh) | Makes the mist |
| Medicine cup | Holds the prescribed medicine |
| Mask or mouthpiece | Right size for the person |
| Prescribed medicine | Only what your doctor prescribed |
Step by step
- Wash your hands.
- Set up: machine on a flat table; connect the tube to the compressor and cup (or charge your mesh nebulizer).
- Add the medicine exactly as prescribed, then close the cup.
- Attach the mask or mouthpiece and sit upright.
- Switch on and breathe slowly and normally through the mouth.
- Continue until the mist stops, then switch off.
- Clean the cup and mask and let them air-dry.
Good habits
- Keep the cup upright so medicine is not wasted.
- Use one mask per person.
- Replace kits and masks when cloudy or cracked.
- Keep a spare mask set at home.
Get help if…
- Breathing gets worse during or after nebulization.
- Lips look bluish.
- The medicine does not seem to help.
